A Bit More on Magic Wands

No, this isn't the rest of what I promised about Magic Wands. I’ve been caught up the last week or so in the ongoing drama of a friend and haven’t had time to write much beyond my name. So here at least is something to keep you coming back until I have time to write more extensively:

I’ve had some private responses to my last post (you know who you are!) and it did remind me that somewhere, once upon a time, I read a blog by a couple who called themselves TwiddlyBits and DanglyBits. In spite of all the wonderful feelings I have for "Magic Wands" there is no way I personally would trade my TwiddlyBits for DanglyBits. As is probably pretty obvious, all Freudian pontificating to the contrary, I have never suffered from "penis envy." Viva TwiddlyBits for me and DanglyBits for them. It's so much more fun this way!

Envy is a curious emotion. Sometimes I felt it when I was in the presence of "stars" who seemed to be enjoying their status. As a basketball player, I always wanted to be taller so I suppose that amounted to envy of a sort. I remember one game in which I found myself "guarding" someone about a foot taller. He jumped up and I recall very clearly looking at his waist more or less straight on. Quite a humbling moment.

Gender body envy is very puzzling to try to imagine but I suppose it could or does happen. Maybe someone who has it will post and offer an explanation of what it feels like. I always had trouble understanding the concept of "man" trapped in a "womanly" body or vice versa. Both seemed to involve rather outdated stereotypes of each. My limitations are to blame, in all probablility.

A conjecture: since many wands are symbols of power, maybe what was actually envied was the power that the wand had or symbolized. Perhaps, Freud mistook the natural desire for power, authority, and control for symbols of all three?

A good friend has a daughter who is now grown and happily married. The daughter when very young, perhaps four or so, observed a naked male statue, perhaps on a fountain. She was very concerned for the little boy because he had this growth between his legs. A reaction about as far from envy as can be conceived!

I really like your conjecture, brst, it makes very good sense. It should have been obvious to me, I'm glad you caught it for me!

I used to read TwiddlyBits some time ago. Are they still around?

And I agree with you totally, no trade offs here! I don't want anything! dangling between my legs! lol I also don't want the 'power' that goes with that thing either. I wouldn't make a very good time, I'm afraid!

~Hugs and have a good weekend!
